Bug Collection Jar Fingerprint Art
This bug collection jar activity turns colorful fingerprints into tiny insects. Children press fingerprints inside a jar outline, then add legs, wings, eyes, dots, and antennae with a marker.
Best for: Insect theme, spring or summer units, fine motor practice, nature study, and creative drawing details.

Materials
- Bug collection jar template or jar outline
- Washable ink pads or paint
- Black markers
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Wipes or damp paper towels
- Optional: magnifying glasses or bug picture cards
How to Do the Activity
- Give each child a jar outline on white paper.
- Invite children to choose ink or paint colors for their bugs.
- Help children press fingerprints inside the jar.
- Let the fingerprints dry for a few minutes if needed.
- Use a black marker to turn each fingerprint into a bug by adding legs, eyes, antennae, wings, or spots.
- Count the bugs together and invite children to name their favorites.

- How many bugs are in your jar?
- Which bug is the smallest?
- Which bug has wings?
- What colors did you choose?
- Where might these bugs live outside?
Teacher Tip: Model one fingerprint bug first, then leave room for children's own ideas. Some bugs may become spiders, beetles, caterpillars, or completely imaginary insects, and that is part of the charm.
