Ocean Theme + Name Craft

Fish Name Craft

Age Group: 3-5 years old

This fish name craft is a bright ocean-themed literacy activity where children paint a water background, cut out colorful fish, and add letters to spell a name. It is simple, playful, and easy to adapt for name recognition, letter practice, or a classroom ocean display.

Best for: Ocean themes, name recognition, letter identification, preschool literacy centers, cutting practice, gluing, and classroom display boards.

Learning Goals

  • Name recognition
  • Letter identification
  • Fine motor skills
  • Creative expression

  • Paintbrush
  • Colored construction paper
  • Scissors

  • Black marker
  • Optional: letter cards or name cards

How to Do the Activity

  1. Invite children to paint a simple ocean background on blue paper.
  2. Cut fish shapes from colorful construction paper.
  3. Write one letter of the child's name on each fish, or invite older children to copy the letters.
  4. Add simple eyes and smiles with a black marker.
  5. Arrange the fish across the ocean background in name order.
  6. Glue the fish in place and let the artwork dry.
  7. Use the finished craft to read the name, count the letters, and talk about the colors of the fish.

Questions to Ask Children

  • What letters do you see in your name?
  • Which fish comes first?
  • How many fish are in your name?
  • What colors did you choose for your fish?
  • Where are your fish swimming?
Teacher Tip: Write each child's name on a small card so they can match the fish letters in order. For younger children, pre-cut the fish and write the letters ahead of time so they can focus on arranging, naming, and gluing.
