Shark Fin Ocean Art
This shark fin ocean art activity is a dramatic ocean-themed process art project for preschoolers. Children paint a blue ocean background, add cut paper shark fins, and use white paint to create splashes, foam, and wave marks around each fin. It is a simple way to combine painting, cutting practice, gluing, ocean vocabulary, and storytelling with easy classroom materials.

Materials
- Blue construction paper or cardstock
- White cardstock or thick white paper
- Blue washable paint in a few shades
- White washable paint
- Paintbrushes
- Glue stick or liquid glue
- Scissors for adult use or supervised child cutting
- Paint tray or paper plate
- Table covering and smocks
How to Do the Activity
- Cut several shark fin shapes from white cardstock. Make a mix of tall, small, curved, and narrow fins so children can choose different sizes.
- Give each child a sheet of blue construction paper or cardstock for the ocean background.
- Invite children to brush blue paint across the middle of the paper. Use light blue, dark blue, and a little white paint to make layered ocean streaks.
- While the ocean area is still visible, place the paper fins on top of the painted water and glue them down.
- Use white paint to dab and brush little foam marks around the bottom of each fin.
- Add a few short white wave lines across the water to make the ocean look splashy and moving.
- Let the artwork dry flat, then invite children to describe what is happening in their ocean scene.

Teacher Tip: Pre-cut the fins for younger preschoolers so they can focus on painting and placing the pieces. Older preschoolers can draw and cut their own fin shapes, then arrange them before gluing to practice planning, size comparison, and positional words like behind, beside, near, and far.
