Underwater Viewer Discovery Activity
This underwater viewer discovery activity is a simple ocean science invitation for preschoolers. Children draw an underwater scene, place a clear baking dish over the picture, add blue-tinted water, and use a clear cup as a little viewing window to reveal the sea life underneath. It feels a bit magical while building observation skills, ocean vocabulary, and cause-and-effect thinking.
Best for: Ocean themes, science centers, water play, observation practice, cause-and-effect conversations, vocabulary building, and small-group exploration.

Materials
- White paper
- Markers or crayons
- Clear glass baking dish or clear sensory tray
- Water
- A small amount of blue washable paint or blue food coloring
- Clear plastic cup or clear glass cup
- Towel or tray for spills
- Optional: ocean animal cards for inspiration
How to Do the Activity
- Invite children to draw an underwater scene on white paper with seaweed, fish, coral, shells, or other ocean details.
- Place the finished drawing flat on the table.
- Set a clear glass baking dish or clear sensory tray on top of the drawing.
- Add water to the dish, then mix in a small amount of blue washable paint or blue food coloring.
- Give children a clear cup and show them how to press it gently into the blue water.
- Move the cup slowly across the dish and look through it to find the hidden underwater picture below.
- Invite children to name what they can see, describe details, and move the viewer to search for more ocean clues.
- Dry the area when finished and save the drawing for another round of discovery play if desired.

- What happens when you move the cup across the water?
- Which ocean animal or plant did you find first?
- Why do you think the picture is easier to see inside the cup?
- What else could we add to our underwater scene next time?
Teacher Tip: Use only a tiny amount of blue paint or food coloring so the water looks ocean-like but the picture can still be revealed. Keep towels nearby, supervise glass dishes closely, and use a clear plastic tray or cup if that is safer for your group.
